This essay aims to outline ethnomethodological perspective for the study of categories. Harvey Sacks developed an original approach called Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA). Against philosophical approach and cognitive anthropology, for Sacks categories are not elements of a categorial decontestualized grid, but his interest is for categories as activity. The focus of MCA is on the use of membership categories, membership categorization device and category predicate by members. MCA investigates categories as ordinary resources for the production of social life. Sacksian approach has been enlarged by british school of ethnomethodology, which has connected MCA to durhkeimian interest for the moral order.
