The role of water as an essential nutrient for animals, their health, performance and welfare is often underestimated. at present there exists no specific legal regulation which defines the quality of water for animal consumption. An investigation was carried out on 39 intensive reared livestocks in order to evaluate the chemical and physical characteristics of drinking water obtained from both the source and the drinkers of each farm. The results showed that in n.15 farms (38.4%) the quality of the water examined resulted comparable to the quality recommended for human consumption. In same few cases a worse quality has been observed at the drinkers, when examined. In the remainig farms the value in one or more of the parameters tested exceeded the limits defined by the italian regulation for the drinking water for humans.
