Optimisation of the productive performances of sheep at pasture relates to dry matter intake and the quality of the selected diet. Agronomic management can significantly affect herbage biomass and digestibility. The aim of this work was to verify the effects of agronomic management (ploughing vs. harrowing) on both sward composition and dry matter intake and digestibility by grazing ewes. Two methods to estimate dry matter intake, i.e. the n-alkanes technique vs. the use of herbage exclosures, were also compared.

Abstract

Optimisation of the productive performances of sheep at pasture relates to dry matter intake and the quality of the selected diet. Agronomic management can significantly affect herbage biomass and digestibility. The aim of this work was to verify the effects of agronomic management (ploughing vs. harrowing) on both sward composition and dry matter intake and digestibility by grazing ewes. Two methods to estimate dry matter intake, i.e. the n-alkanes technique vs. the use of herbage exclosures, were also compared.
