To evaluate nitrogen ruminal microbial efficiency a latin square design (2 six-days trials × 2 diets, G and S, × 6 Comisana dry ewes) was applied. The two diets were composed, on dry basis, of 1th cut lucerne hay (74% , G; 72% S), cracked barley grain (15%), corn gluten meal (11% G) or soybean meal s.e 44%CP (13% S), to obtain same levels of: CP, energy, carbohydrate and protein Cornell fractions, french PDIME and PDIMN. Ewes were maintained in metabolic cages in order to estimate in vivo digestibility and microbial nitrogen supply, by total collection of feces and urine. Both diets permitted the same total intestinal microbial nitrogen supply, respectively G and S, 9,13 vs 9,06 g microbial nitrogen/kg DOMI. The obtained results allow to conclude that the Cornell carbohydrate and protein fractions evaluation will may be useful also in sheep feeding. The G and S values were respectively 34% and 37% lower than in the french estimation.
