A new documentation, emerged in the Mediceo del Principato Archive, throws light on a phase of the construction of Livorno’s fortification. The fortification with ramparts, testified in the map of the extension of the city planned by Bernardo Buontalenti in 1576, was built following precise instructions of Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1568-69. The Duke of Florence, at that time already retired from public affairs in favour of his son Francesco I, had a determinant role for the definition of shape of the fortified wall and of the ramparts with “orechioni”, as protection for the gunner. Abstract
My paper will also analyze the construction, the organization of the work-site (methods of supply and origins of the work force and of construction materials) and the artificers of this phase of the fortification of LivornoI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
