Although not easily perceived and available, the underground context of a city – the so-called “fourth dimension” – is capable of revealing unknown aspects (geographic, geological, historical, architectural, archaeological) of living. Perugia, a city of very ancient origins, preserves a dense network of anthropic cavities of different types and historical periods: wells, cisterns, drainage tunnels and other Etruscan-Romans, medieval and even recent structures which allow us to reconstruct the profile of an authentic underground landscape, geological and cultural at the same time. The activities of census, geopositioning and characterization of underground sites, which started a few years ago, are here updated and considered with a dual purpose: first, for the surface prevention of hydrogeological risk, and secondly to highlight the didactic and touristic potential of the main caves.

Abstract
Although not easily perceived and available, the underground context of a city – the so-called “fourth dimension” – is capable of revealing unknown aspects (geographic, geological, historical, architectural, archaeological) of living. Perugia, a city of very ancient origins, preserves a dense network of anthropic cavities of different types and historical periods: wells, cisterns, drainage tunnels and other Etruscan-Romans, medieval and even recent structures which allow us to reconstruct the profile of an authentic underground landscape, geological and cultural at the same time. The activities of census, geopositioning and characterization of underground sites, which started a few years ago, are here updated and considered with a dual purpose: first, for the surface prevention of hydrogeological risk, and secondly to highlight the didactic and touristic potential of the main caves.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
