This article illustrates the main issues and characteristics of Mexican cross-border workers in United States, from the Mexican-American War till recent times. The mobility of commuters is firstly considered through the analysis of laws and administrative practices that made migrants’ status «artificial», and through available data on crossings and employment sector. Then, the article examines political and social oppositions to this form of labor mobility, and workers’ mobility strategies linked to maquiladoras.
