Equine neosporosis is a parasitic infection caused by Neospora spp., an apicomplexan cystforming coccidia of which the species N. caninum has been recognized as one of the most important and worldwide cause of abortion in dairy cattle. Limited information on the prevalence of neosporosis in horses and the association between transplacental transmission of this protozoan agent and abortion or neonatal foal loss is presently available (Lindsay 2001; Dubey et al. 2003). The aim of the present work was to investigate the role played by Neospora spp. in the etiopathogenesis of equine abortion and stillbirth rate, using PCR, histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations on aborted foetuses or stillbirth foals.

Abstract
Equine neosporosis is a parasitic infection caused by Neospora spp., an apicomplexan cystforming coccidia of which the species N. caninum has been recognized as one of the most important and worldwide cause of abortion in dairy cattle. Limited information on the prevalence of neosporosis in horses and the association between transplacental transmission of this protozoan agent and abortion or neonatal foal loss is presently available (Lindsay 2001; Dubey et al. 2003). The aim of the present work was to investigate the role played by Neospora spp. in the etiopathogenesis of equine abortion and stillbirth rate, using PCR, histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations on aborted foetuses or stillbirth foals.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
