Abstract

This research investigates the effects of the presence of a small leak on the characteristics of pressure transients in a single pipe, within a transient analysis procedure. Results of an experimental investigation carried out at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the University of Perugia are presented and discussed. Even though further experiments are needed, the reported preliminary results seem rather encouraging about the possibility of leak detection through unstead-ystate tests, which do not give rise to severe overpressures.
