Arroyo del Medio (Province of Jujuy, northwest Argentina) is a tributary of the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Rio Grande). Although the catchment is small in area (about 60 km2), debris flows remove large amounts of materials and are important both from a morphogenetic point of view, and owing to the related risk, since they affect international road and railway systems, causing heavy economic damages. The removed material frequently causes the interruption of road and railway and also the blockage of the Quebrada, producing dam lakes. Debris flows built an enormous alluvial fan, measuring 70 metres in front’s height and such an area that can be easily recognized in the satellitary images at scale 1:1,000,000. Considering the risk conditions due to such phenomena and their influence on the social-economic development of the Quebrada, the mechanisms producing these processes were analysed, in order to plan a project which, at once, provide to realize a monitoring-alarm system, hoping that heavy structural interventions permit both the geological-hydraulic risk mitigation, and the availability of the area.
