An outbreak of neonatal mortality which occurred during the 2005 breeding season on a Thoroughbred stud farm is described. In a short period 9 foals, born from mares which had arrived at the stud during the last stage of gestation, died. The mares were regularly vaccinated with different protocols using a commercially available inactivated vaccine against Equid herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) and Equid herpesvirus type 4 (EHV-4). The foals died shortly after their birth and underwent gross pathological, histological and molecular biology examinations. Typical macroscopic lesions and eosinophilic nuclear inclusions were respectively detected necroscopy and at a histological level. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed EHV-1 DNA from the organs of all the foals. This case was signalled to highlight that vaccination alone is not sufficient to prevent the disease if it is not backed up by rational precepts of management of the stud farm.
