he paper presents new estimates at the regional level of the impact of height, as a proxy of well-being, of the process of economic growth known as the “economic miracle” which occurred in Italy during the mid-twentieth century. Our findings suggest a large part of the regional convergence in height occurred during Italy’s economic boom in which the speed of convergence of the Southern regions towards those of the North in the period 1960-1970 was about 2.2-2.5% per year, slackening since the 1970s. We discuss the results in light of the great transformation experienced by Italy, also dealing with the question of whether internal migration from South to North contributed to the convergence over-estimation in height. The response is an affirmative one.

Abstract

he paper presents new estimates at the regional level of the impact of height, as a proxy of well-being, of the process of economic growth known as the “economic miracle” which occurred in Italy during the mid-twentieth century.
