Based on the salient geological characteristics of the territory of Gubbio (northern Umbria, Italy), the note deals with the main areal, linear and point-like geomorphological elements and the “attractors” which, starting from the Bronze Age, determined the settlement vocation of the area in which the urban center of Gubbio was developed. The importance of the Bottaccione Gorge, which crosses the reliefs overlooking the city, is also highlighted as a trans-Apennine corridor between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides during the Bronze and Iron Ages. The most convincing hypotheses on the location of the Umbrian city of Iguvium and its arx are compared with the physiographic characteristics of the territory examined, both to better define the peculiarities of the late-republican and imperial city, and the new important connecting role assumed by the Bottaccione Gorge between viae publicae such as Via Amerina and Via Flaminia during the Roman period.

Abstract
Based on the salient geological characteristics of the territory of Gubbio (northern Umbria, Italy), the note deals with the main areal, linear and point-like geomorphological elements and the “attractors” which, starting from the Bronze Age, determined the settlement vocation of the area in which the urban center of Gubbio was developed. The importance of the Bottaccione Gorge, which crosses the reliefs overlooking the city, is also highlighted as a trans-Apennine corridor between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides during the Bronze and Iron Ages. The most convincing hypotheses on the location of the Umbrian city of Iguvium and its arx are compared with the physiographic characteristics of the territory examined, both to better define the peculiarities of the late-republican and imperial city, and the new important connecting role assumed by the Bottaccione Gorge between viae publicae such as Via Amerina and Via Flaminia during the Roman period.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
