Colore, pietra e città. Il colore delle pietre e il linguaggio dell’architettura a Perugia tra XV e XVI secolo

Every city in Umbria takes on the color of the rock on which it is built; Perugia, on the other hand, has a very varied color repertoire. What may be the reasons that, in historical times, led to the use of one stone rather than another? The choice of building stone does not depend only on the possibility of easily quarrying and transporting the material. Starting with some important buildings constructed in Perugia during the Renaissance, we will discuss how stones and their colors are able to fix a distinctive character to architecture that succeeds in evoking a certain architectural language.

Ogni città dell’Umbria assume il colore della roccia sulla quale è costruita; Perugia presenta invece un repertorio cromatico assai variegato. Quali possono essere i motivi che, in epoca storica, hanno portato ad utilizzare una pietra anziché un’altra? La scelta della pietra da costruzione non dipende soltanto dalla possibilità di cavare e trasportare con facilità il materiale. Partendo da alcuni importanti edifici costruiti a Perugia nel Rinascimento, si dirà come le pietre e i loro colori sono in grado di fissare un carattere distintivo all’architettura che riesce a evocare un determinato linguaggio architettonico.
