A numerical model was developed to analyze the main characteristics of the dynamic behavior of cables under wind loading. The model accounted for non-linear geometrical effects and it was developed using the finite element method, performing the analysis in the time-domain by a direct integration method. The results obtained from the numerical model were compared to those derived from several wind-tunnel experimental tests on a scale model of the cable. The tests were performed both in laminar and in turbulent flow, and the axial force at the supports and the overall drag force, together with mid-span displacements, were logged. Moreover, the data by experimental tests allowed an estimate of the wind action on the cable, which was used to load the numerical model. The analysis was performed considering both wind mean action and dynamic effects due to wind fluctuations. The comparison between numerical and experimental results was made.
