The paper aims to analyze the question of affective life in Théodule Ribot, with regard to notions such as pure affections, emotions, and passions. Although Ribot’s study of affective life has rarely caught the attention of interpreters, such an inquiry proves to be not only one of the most stable and recurring lines of research of the author’s work, but also an opportunity for Ribot to interact with various psychological debates of the time.
