The present paper reports the results obtained during an investigation conducted in 13 dairy herds characterized by three different litter types. The aim of this study was to collect litter samples and analyze them for the qualitative and quantitative presence of some pathogenic bacteria belonging to Micrococcaceae and Enterobacteriaceae, using selective microbiological media. Samples of litter were regularly picked up and numbers of aerobic Total Bacterial Count (aerobic TBC), Micrococcaceae and Enterobacteriaceae evaluated. The results show values of aerobial TBC ranging between 11,66 e 5,70 log10 (CFU/g), Micrococcaceae ranging between 12,30 e 6,00 log10 (CFU/g), and Enterobacteriaceae ranging between 9,95 e 3,70 log10 (CFU/g). Significant differences (P<0,01) were found in aerobic TBC, Micrococcaceae and Enterobacteriaceae densities throughout the sampling period. Seven species of Micrococcaceae and twenty-one species of Enterobacteriaceae were identified with significant differences in variability ad isolation frequency (P<0,01) in the three different litter types. Micrococcus varians roseus was the dominant species of Micrococcaceae and Staphylococcus xylosus was found in all the three different litter types. Escherichia coli, was the dominant species of Enterobacteriaceae. Salmonella spp. was observed during a sampling only in one type of litter. The results are discussed.
