The Plain of Ferretto, situated to the west of Trasimeno Lake (Central Italy), is of great interest for the presence of the priority Habitat 3170 "Mediterranean temporary ponds" of the Annex I to the Habitat Directive 92/43 EEC. The area is characterized by the presence of oligotrophic acid soils with a seasonal superficial water table. This particular pedological situation, combined with a climatic condition with a strong summer drought, is the cause of the presence, in such a territory, of a system of small temporary ponds that gives rise to a peculiar eco-mosaic, characterized by the presences of rare species and a complex of vegetation of great naturalistic value. The pools are developed mostly inside the glades of the forest, in mosaic with heathlands, garrigues or grasslands. They show a variable level of complexity, giving place to an articulated vegetational micro-mosaic. Although the anthropic presence has deeply affected the natural vegetation distribution and actual cover in the area, the floristic-vegetational- environmental study confirms the high naturalistic and scientific value of the eco-mosaic in the Plain of Ferretto.
