Enea ad Ardea

Through the reading of literary sources, and thanks to the examination of archaeological evidence, this paper highlights the mythical and historical-religious relations between Aeneas and the city of Ardea, and between him and the sanctuary of "Castrum Inui" (Fosso dell’Incastro). Precisely in this sanctuary was found a temple attributed to the Trojan hero, who was venerated in the "Latium Vetus" as "Indiges". Therefore, the A. proposes to connect a stone inscribed with the letter “V” found in the middle section of the aforementioned temple to the cult of "Vesperugo", the evening star, wich represented the nocturnal aspect of Aphrodite-Venus. This was the mythical mother of Aeneas, who led her son to the coast of Latium and had an important sanctuary at Lavinium as well. Attraverso la lettura delle fonti letterarie, e grazie all’esame delle evidenze archeologiche, il contributo mette in luce le relazioni – mitiche e storico-religiose - tra Enea e la città di Ardea, tra Enea e il santuario di "Castrum Inui". Proprio nel santuario in località Fosso dell’Incastro è stato rinvenuto un tempio attributo all’eroe troiano, venerato nel "Latium Vetus" come "Indiges". L’A. propone quindi di collegare un cippo iscritto rinvenuto nella zona mediana del tempio al culto di "Vesperugo", la stella vespertina che rappresentava l’aspetto notturno della madre di Enea: quell’Afrodite-Venere titolare di un importante santuario anche a Lavinio, che aveva guidato il figlio verso le coste del Lazio.
