A conceptual semi-distributed model of rainfall-runoff type which incorporates the SCS-CN method for loss representation is used in order to investigate the accuracy of this method over watersheds located in Central Italy of area from 57 to 272 km2. Very large errors in the total volume of direct runoff were obtained with mean values in magnitude of about 70%. It is also shown that the optimal values of the potential retention computed for each event do not agree with the SCS classification of antecedent moisture conditions based on the 5-day total antecedent rainfall. The use of a shorter time period, 3 days, led to similar results. A detailed analysis on a larger number of events should be carried out for adapting the classical relationships for assessing the initial soil moisture condition.

Abstract
A conceptual semi-distributed model of rainfall-runoff type which incorporates the SCS-CN method for loss representation is used in order to investigate the accuracy of this method over watersheds located in Central Italy of area from 57 to 272 km2. Very large errors in the total volume of direct runoff were obtained with mean values in magnitude of about 70%. It is also shown that the optimal values of the potential retention computed for each event do not agree with the SCS classification of antecedent moisture conditions based on the 5-day total antecedent rainfall. The use of a shorter time period, 3 days, led to similar results. A detailed analysis on a larger number of events should be carried out for adapting the classical relationships for assessing the initial soil moisture condition.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
