To value ventricular performance indexes of the heart in the athletic horse, B-mode and Doppler echocardiographic examinations were performed in a group of 16 Italian trotter yearlings, 7 males and 9 females, 16 - 18 months old, at the beginning of the training period, and on the occasion of the competition debut Considering that systolic and diastolic dysfunctions frequently coexist, a combining systolic and diastolic measure of the left ventricle function obtained with Doppler examination could be more indicative for cardiac dysfunctions, than a single systolic and diastolic valuation by B-mode or M-mode technique.In this contest not only the B-mode echocardiography but also the Myocardial Performance Index (MPI) obtained by spectral Doppler is proposed to estimate the left ventricle functionality of the horses, according to the method that C. Tei described in the 1995 in humane medicine.Then a statistic examination of the data was performed with "R" software (2004), to value any differences between Diastolic Index (DI) (B-mode left ventricle functionality index) and the MPI (Doppler index) in comparison with the athletic performance of the horses.
