Verso un glossario grafico castellano. Rilievo e catalogazione degli elementi tipologici delle architetture fortificate in Umbria

The architectural heritage of fortified constructions occupies an outstanding place in the collective agination, both for the tangible presence of landscapes modelled over time by castle structures and for the suggestions born from the process of re-semantisation of the Middle Ages in the 19th century and then consolidated through various media contexts, from literature to painting to cinema. The reading and interpretation of this heritage play a crucial role in the conservation and the enhancement of the defensive architectures scattered across the territory. The tool currently used to analyse and interpret this heritage is the glossary known as ‘castellan nomenclature’ drawn up by the Istituto Italiano dei Castelli, a reference body for the study and the protection of fortified constructions in Italy. This work, starting from a series of architectural surveys carried out on the fortifications of the Umbrian territory, proposes the construction of a graphic glossary systematically enriched with images and drawings, supplemented by a cartographic visualisation system, to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and recognition of the typological elements of castles, promoting the divulgation and valorisation of their peculiarities.
