Contribution to the knowledge of aquatic and macrophytic vegetation of the Monticchio Lakes - A floristic and vegetational study of the Monticchio Lakes, situated in the south of Basilicata region, is submitted. The phytocenosis of aquatic and swamp vegetation, herbaceous and woody, have been examined. Trough the study the following vegetation types were pointed out: Myriophyllo verticillati-Nupharetum lutei, Potametum lucentis and Ceratophylletum demersi of the Potametea pectinati class; Scirpetum lacustris, Phragmitetum vulgaris, Typhetum angustifoliae, Sparganietum erecti, Caricetum paniculatae, Mentho aquaticae-Caricetum pseudocyperi, Mariscetum serrati, Caricetum ripariae, Cyperetum longi of the Phragmito-Magnocaricetea class; Cirsio triumfettii-Salicetum cinereae solanetosum dulcamarae of the Alnetea glutinosae class; Populetum albae, Carici remotae-Fraxinetum oxycarpae alnetosum glutinosae and Salicetum albae of the Querco-Fagetea class. Among these associations, the following are to be signaled since they are sparsely diffused in the Italian territory: Cirsio triumfettii-Salicetum cinereae solanetosum dulcamarae, Mariscetum serrati, Carici remotae-Fraxinetum oxycarpae alnetosum glutinosae, Mentho aquaticae-Caricetum pseudocyperi and Caricetum paniculatae. The following associations, on the other hand, have a particular phytogeographical importance, the observed sites of which represent the southernmost areas of distribution: Mariscetum serrati and Mentho aquaticae-Caricetum pseudocyperi. The associations: Myriophyllo verticillati-Nupharetum lutei, Ceratophylletum demersi, Sparganietum erecti, Caricetum paniculatae, Mentho aquaticae-Caricetum pseudocyperi, Mariscetum serrati, Caricetum ripariae, Cyperetum longi, Cirsio triumfettii-Salicetum cinereae solanetosum dulcamarae, Salicetum albae are the first time recorded for the Basilicata region.
