In the geography of memory, new and intense interpretations of iconic architectures can bloom though humanistic and technologic research. On this, the lore of a peculiar type of masonry is addressed: the ‘in falso’ wall, a load bearing element built without a direct load path to foundations, resting on the underlying vaults. Their recurrence in heritage is not only neglected by the literature but should not be taken lightly, especially in terms of prevention of progressive collapses due to seismic action and masonry vaults’ damage. A review of the state of the art, actually poor, is done along with historicaliconographical analyses of case studies, enriching the story of a structural/architectural solution - in most cases still effective - that digs into the unique design approach of ancient architects.
