The text addresses the issues of functional illiteracy and early school leaving, highlighting their socio-economic, cultural, and family-related causes. Functional illiteracy refers to the loss of basic literacy skills over time, while school dropout concerns young people leaving education prematurely. Both phenomena undermine social cohesion and economic mobility, perpetuating exclusion cycles. The work explores European and Italian strategies to counter these issues, including lifelong learning programs, adult education centers (CPIA), and digital schools for the elderly. Special focus is given to the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, regarded both as valuable tools and potential risks. The paper finally proposes prompt engineering as a transversal skill that can enhance critical thinking and communication abilities to prevent functional illiteracy.

Il testo affronta le problematiche dell’analfabetismo di ritorno e della dispersione scolastica, evidenziandone le cause socioeconomiche, culturali e familiari. L’analfabetismo di ritorno si manifesta quando individui precedentemente alfabetizzati perdono competenze di base, mentre la dispersione scolastica coinvolge giovani che abbandonano precocemente gli studi. Entrambi i fenomeni compromettono la coesione sociale e la mobilità economica, generando cicli di esclusione. Il contributo analizza le strategie europee e italiane di contrasto, come il lifelong learning, i CPIA e le scuole digitali per anziani. Particolare attenzione è dedicata al ruolo delle tecnologie digitali e dell’intelligenza artificiale, viste sia come opportunità sia come possibili fattori aggravanti. Infine, si propone il prompt engineering come competenza trasversale capace di potenziare abilità cognitive e comunicative utili a contrastare l’analfabetismo di ritorno.
