Abstract

The contribution investigates dwelling practices and spatial uses of the public space as observed through ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Umbertide, in the Upper Tiber Valley. Over the years, the town has seen a significant increase in the presence of North African immigrants, coming from different geographical areas and belonging to various age groups; a presence that, while elusive in some respects, is clearly visible in the forms of appropriation and use of cer-tain places, which are affected by transient and permanent changes that necessitate new read-ing codes. The construction of a mosque, now suspended for economic and political reasons, marked a fracture within the urban population. Observing these transformations and questioning the new spatial grammars allows us to grasp overlapping and intersecting habitats of meaning, generating possible connections and transforming practices and strategies of living
