Why venture a comparison between two authors so dis- tant in terms of time, language and culture? Why believe that these two authors can offer a resource for a change of perspective today? If we evaluate two elements common to both, such as the criticism of the absolutism of the Cartesian cogito and the reconsideration of history as a place of meaning, we note that the two philosophies ultimately have a common dual objective, namely to restore depth to the non-objectification of meaning and, at the same time, to limit the claims of the cogito towards an absolute knowledge of truth. History demonstrates the presence of many truths and just as many meanings. But absolute truth and the claim to objectivity are nothing more than prejudice. But the truth, explains Vico, is not that of geometry or that of the illusions of scientific systems. The truth is the prerequisite for all of this: the condition. And we arrive at it not through geometry, but through true seconds, imagination and intuition.
