A short route for the synthesis of (2R,3S)- and (2R,3R)-2-benzyloxy(allyloxy)-3-hydroxybutyrolactones from available chiral non-racemic methyl 3,4-O-isopropyliden-(L)-threonate and ethyl 3,4-O-isopropyliden-(D)-erythronate respectively, is described.
