BACKGROUND: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, achieving disinfection standards for workers in the health-hospital as well as in other settings has become a pressing need. In order to promote hand disinfection practices, it is important to search for products that are not only effective, but also well-tolerated. METHODS: The product investigated in this publication is Amuchina Gel Xgerm, a ready-to-use alcohol-based hand gel rub sanitizer. The solution was tested to assess its efficacy against bacterial (i.e., S. aureus, E. coli, E. hirae, P. aerugi-nosa), viral (i.e., Poliovirus, Adenovirus, Murine Norovirus, DHBV, BVDV, HIV-1, SARS-COV-2, HSV-1, HSV-2, Human coxsackievirus 5), fungal (i.e., C. albicans, A. brasiliensis, C. auris) and mycobacterial (M. terrae) strains in vitro and with respect to hygienic and surgical washing practices, according to the required European standards. In addition, the tolerability of the product was tested on adult and paediatric populations and compared to a competitor, while risk assess-ment tests evaluated its safety. RESULTS: The test product showed bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal activity with respect to the tested strains. Moreover, it was well tolerated and volunteers rated it positively in terms of consistency, fragrance, easy absorption, with superior results compared to two competitors. After prolonged use the solution did not lead to any skin or systemic side effects, and safety outcomes rated the product as risk-free for users. CONCLUSIONS: The test product demonstrates broad efficacy, tolerability and safety, laying the groundwork for further investigation with respect to other pathogens and settings.
