Growing evidence suggests that among the causes which deteriorate qualitative and functional characterisitics of semen after freezing and thawing, there are those linked to oxidative stress and decrease detoxification of antioxidants present in the cells and seminal plasma. In particular, cryopreservation reduces the GSH content of spermatozoa. We assessed the motility and levels of GSH in bovine semen after freezing a thawing, and compared egg yolk tris-citrate and Bioxcel extenders. Bioxcell was superior in preserving both GSH (647.2+300.1 vs 223.6+154.0 pmoles/mL) and motility levels (44.33+4.82 vs41.83+3.99%) compared to egge yolk Tris-citrate extender. Furthermore researches are demanded to validate in vivo these results.
