The Montedoglio dam (AR) on the Tiber River was planned in the early 1970s; the reservoir is fed by a catchment of 275.8 km2. The basin is composed mainly of medium-low to low permeability rock types, belonging to the Liguridi and Umbro-Marchigiano-Romagnolo complexes and to the Cervarola Unit. According to management plans, the dam will provide water for irrigation to the Chiana Valley, the Tiber Valley and Lake Trasimeno, as well as for drinking in many municipalities in Umbria and Tuscany. The climate in Central Italy is now going through a dry phase, to be linked to the global climatic variations. The analysis of the precipitation time series of the area for the last 70 years shows an overall climatic tendency, indicating a decrease in rainfall. The estimated present water budget indicates a 10% decrease in water yield volumes compared to that obtainable from climatic data at the time the dam was planned. If the present climatic trend persists, as it seems likely, some doubts are raised about the possibility for the reservoir to satisfy the water demand for which it was built. The work was carried out using weather data taken mostly outside the lake basin, since that stations and data from inside the basin are extremely scarce: given the importance of the issue, an adequate weather network should be put into operation.
