Abstract
The current consideration of Penna’s texts appears to tenaciously reflect an old prejudice of critics concerning the impossibility of “philological impositions” on Penna’s poetry. This attitude continues also because his poetry seems by its very nature to take some distance from the idea of history. Penna uses a language in which the autonomy of the significant allows the neutralizion of the most comprehensive everyday lexicon, with de-historicizing and de-realizing results. In reality, the recent re-emergence of about one- third of Penna’s complete works of the period 1932-59 scattered throughout journals and newspapers, has allowed us to begin to deal with the problem of dating, considering the first magazine publication as the ante quem. Furthermore, the article documents a particular characteristic of Penna of accumulating “reserves” of previously- written poetry that had already appeared in print, even after a thirtyyear period, from which he draw in order to publish them much later as “unpublished work”, sometimes dating them from the 1970s.
