Erythroleukemic cells are tumor cells which in culture differentiate into ted blood cell precursors in the presence of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) (Friend et al. 1966; Friend et al. 1971). The degree of differentiation is evaluated on the basis of the presence of hemoglobin. Evaluation can be done either by a biochemical technique, measuring the amount of hemoglobin present in the culture (Scher et al. 1971) or by a selective staining method. The latter allows evaluation of the percentage of differentiated cells with respect to those in which hemoglobin is absent. Avalaible staining methods are base on the use of benzidine.
