Enzootic Nasal Tumor (ENT) is a virus-induced tumor that affects small ruminants; the infection is horizontally transmitted by nasal secretions and excretions, and may infect several animals in the flock, since the term enzootic; someinfected animals will develop the tumor after a long period of incubation. The etiologic agent is a virus belonging to the family Retroviridae, type B/D, called ENTV (Enzootic Nasal Tumor Virus), closely correlated to the virus of Ovine Pulmonary adenocarcinoma (Jaagsiekte Sheep Retro Virus: JSRV) andto the endogenous Sheep Retroviruses (enSRV). Two variants of ENT exist, the first (ENTV-1) affecting the sheep, the second (ENTV-2) specific for the goat, even if a strict specie-specificity is lacking and cross infections are possible. ENTV is distributed worldwide in all the countries with a well-developed sheep and goat industry, with the exceptions of Australia and New Zeland, where the tumor has never been reported. In Italy several cases have been described in the goat, but less frequently, if ever, in the sheep. Aim of the paper is to describe two cases of Enzootic Nasal Tumor in the sheep in Italy, to discuss the potential risk for sheep industry and public health of the infection.
