Giovanni Spadolini, a respected historian and successful newspaper editor, arrived at the helm of «Corriere della Sera» in turbulent times. He was hired by the newspaper owners, the wealthy Crespi family of Milan, in 1968, the year in which the student and worker’s revolt exploded in Italy, and abruptly fired in 1972. Spadolini’s personal archives allow new insight into his vision of journalism, the style of his management of the editorial staff, his relationship with the publishers and with prominent politicians and intellectuals in a Milan upset by violent protest marches and terrorist attacks.

Abstract

Giovanni Spadolini, a respected historian and successful newspaper editor, arrived at the helm of «Corriere della Sera» in turbulent times. He was hired by the newspaper owners, the wealthy Crespi family of Milan, in 1968, the year in which the student and worker’s revolt exploded in Italy, and abruptly fired in 1972.
