Primary hepatic tumours are rare in horses (Barton and Morris, 1998), as the liver is normally involved by metastasis. Cholangiocarcinoma is the most common, particularly in subjects older than 10 years; hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatoblastoma occur less frequently (age: 2–3 years) as well as hamartoma, a rare congenital neoplasm (Boulton, 1987; Roby et al., 1990; Brown et al., 2007). Besides being rare, cholangiocellular carcinoma is characterised by a grade of difficulty concerning its diagnosis while the subject is alive, because its progression is slow and the clinical picture is nonspecific (Mueller et al., 1992). Therefore, we found it of relevant importance to describe the clinical picture and the diagnostic approach in a horse affected by this tumour, in order to provide further information about a rarely documented set of cases.
