Equid herpesvirus 5 (EHV-5) infection was detected by the use of a seminested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting glycoprotein B of EHV-5 on nasal swabs and blood samples of 15 foals during the first six months of their life. Foals became positive from the third month of age and the number increased during the first six months of life. Eleven foals showed respiratory clinical signs and the association of the infection with the clinical condition was investigated, but no statistical association was observed.
