The contribution of the mechanical and semi-chemical pulping to total VOC emissions in Europe is significant. In this paper two different emissions abatement systems for the mechanical pulping process are compared, in particular regenerative catalytic incinerator and biofilter. The cleaning and thermal efficiency of the catalytic incinerator was tested in two pulping processes (TMP and PGW) at the Stora Enso pulp mill in Anjalankoski (Finland). The measurements of the cleaning and thermal efficiency levels of the abatement system reveal that the catalytic incinerator was functioning well and the cleaning efficiency was good in both pilot plants. In the same plants, a biofilter simulation has been performed based on VOC concentrations and air flows measured; the cleaning efficiency of the biofilter has been assumed on the basis of results from another pilot test carried out at the Portonogaro pulp mill in Casarsa della Delizia (Italy). Investment and operational costs of the two abatement systems are compared in order to find the most cost efficient technique for the exhaust gases from the plant. The study is based on results of the EU Life Project “VOC less pulping: Control of VOC emissions from mechanical pulping beyond BAT”, LIFE06 ENV/FIN/000201.

Abstract
The study is based on results of the EU Life Project “VOC less pulping: Control of VOC emissions from mechanical pulping beyond BAT”, LIFE06 ENV/FIN/000201.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
