Neuropathic pain originates or is caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system (NS). Animals share a NS similar to that of humans. They also encounter similar conditions during surgery and in traumatic, inflammatory and metabolic disorders, that can lead to the development of neuropathic pain. If neuropathic pain is difficult to diagnose in humans, it is even more difficult in veterinary patients because they are unable to verbalize. Once the neuropathic pain has been diagnosed, an appropriate therapy should be prescribed, considering not only the well known analgesic drugs such as FANS and opioids, but also molecules such as gabapentin, amantidine, imipramine and others, as well as adjuvant techniques, with directions for the owners to observe and report pain behaviour.

Abstract
Neuropathic pain originates or is caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system (NS). Animals share a NS similar to that of humans. They also encounter similar conditions during surgery and in traumatic, inflammatory and metabolic disorders, that can lead to the development of neuropathic pain. If neuropathic pain is difficult to diagnose in humans, it is even more difficult in veterinary patients because they are unable to verbalize. Once the neuropathic pain has been diagnosed, an appropriate therapy should be prescribed, considering not only the well known analgesic drugs such as FANS and opioids, but also molecules such as gabapentin, amantidine, imipramine and others, as well as adjuvant techniques, with directions for the owners to observe and report pain behaviour.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
