The authors present a case of a lethal gunshot wound occurred accidentally on a hunting excursion. An investigation by means of a total-body MSCT with 2D and 3D post-processing reconstruction was performed as an adjuvant method in addition to a traditional autopsy. The advantage of a radiological investigation is that MSCT allows a thorough study of bone lesions, the correct localization of any metallic foreign objects and the visualization of some pathological patterns that are difficult to investigate using tradi- tional methods (such as air embolism, pneumothorax and blood aspiration in the lungs), so as to focus one’s attention appropriately during traditional investigation procedures. The radiological investigations used in this case increased the accuracy in defining the cause of death. They also provided objective and unalterable informative elements that led to the qualitative improvement of the forensic pathological investigation.
