Prostaglandin dehydrogenase activity is histochemically detected in various bovine tissues (kidney, liver, lung, parotid and naso-labial glands) using as substrate prostaglandin F-2α.Our present results show that in the bovine, PGF-2& can be metabolized in the kidneys, liver and lungs, as all of the above organs stain positively for the presence of hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase. In the kidney, the enzymatic activity is largely localized in the tubules and collecting ducts, as was the case for rats and rabbits. In the liver some hepatocytes stain positively and so do the interlobular bronchioles of the lung. Particularly worth mentioning is the observation of PGDH in two exocrine glands, i.e. the parotid and naso-labial glands which in bovines show analogies with salivary glands. Kidney, liver and lung showed the highest intensity of the reaction, but parotid and naso-labial glands also displayed enzymatic activity at the level of the ductal cells.
