The sensitivity of direct runoff hydrograph at basin scale to the use of different map scales for extracting the geomorphological features of the drainage channel network is investigated. The role of both effective rainfall rate and different combinations of the Manning roughness coefficient for overland flow regions and channels is considered. Computations were performed using the non linear kinematic wave approximation for flow transfer in five real basins located in Central Italy. Evidence is given of the considerable differences which may be obtained in the shape of direct runoff hydrograph changing the scale from 1:25,000 to 1:100,000 and of the substantial role of the considered variables in the production of the computed differences. Lastly the importance of these results in formulating hydrologic model is shortly discussed.
