The effectiveness of the conceptual approach proposed by Ahuja [1] is investigated for one-dimensional infiltration into a stable crust of different geometric and hydraulic characteristics overlaying a homogeneous soil. Numerical solutions of the Richards equation are used as a yardstick. The results have pointed out that even for a crust layer of typical thickness, but with a high hydraulic resistance, the model is not accurate. Abstract

Some characteristics of infiltration during complex rainfall patterns over a crust-topped soil are shown and suggestions for realizing more adequate conceptual models are also given.
