This paper deals with the main problems concernine the design of an operational flood forecasting system on the Upper Tiber River basin (4147 km2). The basin, located in Central Italy, is sometimes interested by floodings which are generally due to widespread rainfalls. The main characteristics of the telemetering system, preliminary set up in the basin, and the stochastic modelling used for flow simulation, of type transfer plus noise, are discussed. A san example of model application, the simulation of a flood event occurred in december 1981 is reported; the magnitudo of the flow is well reproduced but the forecasted curve id delayed of about 2 hours. Finally the future development of modelling and the criteria for optimizing the experimental system in relation to the areal rainfall determination are also discussed.
