In the aim to reduce losses due to infertility, breeding soundness examination (BSE) should be conducted 30 to 60 days before the beginning of the breedin season. A BSE sshould include i) physical and reproductive tract examination ii) semen collection and evaluation and iii) evaluation of mating desire. One thousand Italian yearling beef bulls were assigned to the growing performance test (ANABIC Genetic Centre, Perugia, Italy), during which time testicular length (TL) and diameter (TD) and scrotal circumference (SC) were recorde every 30 days and the animals were subjected to a BSE at 13+1 month of age. TL and TD were similar in all breeds (13 and 7 cm, respectively). SC was higher in ROmagnola (33.9 cm) compared to Chianina (P<0.05) and Marchigiana (P<0.01). Percentage of progressive motility and abnormal spermatozoa were 60% and 23%, in all breeds. SC and semen quality represent good markers of potential fertility.
