Numerical models are often used for the management of pressurized pipe systems, either for the leak detection by inverse analysis or for the leakage reduction by pressure control. The required relationship between leak outflow and flow conditions inside the pipe plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of these models. In this paper different relationships between total head and leak outflow for a single leak in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes are compared by means of tests carried out at the Water Engineering Laboratory of the University of Perugia. Some results suggest a time dependence of the leak characteristics.

Abstract

Numerical models are often used for the management of pressurized pipe systems, either for the leak detection by inverse analysis or for the leakage reduction by pressure control. The required relationship between leak outflow and flow conditions inside the pipe plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of these models. In this paper different relationships between total head and leak outflow for a single leak in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes are compared by means of tests carried out at the Water Engineering Laboratory of the University of Perugia. Some results suggest a time dependence of the leak characteristics.
