Ischemic cardiovascular events represent an incrasingly frequent complication of long-lasting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infection and have been attributed either to the infection itself or to higly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Endothelial dysfunction is a precocious marker of atherosclerosis. Abacavir use has been associated with an increased risk of ischemic cardiovascular events in several cohort studies, but the pathogenic mechanisms are still unknown. Our aim was to assess whether patients with chronic HIV-infection present endothelial dysfunction and if this is the consequence of infection or of HAART, comparing patients treated with abacavir (ABC) or Tenofovir (TDF).
