Verify the effects of the activity of the Surgery Department of the Hospital of the ASL 2 in Umbria the beginning of the week-surgery, officially activated on the first of the Januarys 2005. At the same time we wanted to valuate the possibility to reconvert to the week-surgery the patients with a stay in the Hospital of more than five days. The analysis of the surgical activity for the period 2003-2005 (I° semester) was divided in two groups: the I° formed by the patients with a stay in the week-surgery (from Monday to Friday). The II° formed by those with a stay which includes a Saturday or /and a Sunday. For the patients with a week-surgery stay, it was considerate the total number of stays in the Hospital and the type of stay: emergency or programmed stay; the case-mix. For the ones without a week-surgery it was also considered the admissions and/or discharged on a Saturday and/or Sunday and the average weight of the DRG. The week-surgery patients have progressively increased up to 30,7 % in 2005 (estimate) helping. But the 70% of the surgical activity has still a stay in the Hospital of more than five days, and from the analysis it stands out that only partially this activity could be reconverted to a week-surgery. Even the activation of the week-surgery is demonstrating positive results, the main problems for a better functioning are the management of the emergency cases and the “severe” programmed patients.
