Lymphocites do not represent a homogeneous population of cells. There is evidence for two distinct of immuno-competent cells: 1) one is processed by or at least requires the thymus for differentiation and is responsible for cell-mediated immunity and another cell develops independently of the thymus and is concerned with the synthesis of humoral antibody. Present knowledge concerning immunologic functions of the avian bursa of Fabricious is shortly reviewed. Emphasis is given to the relationship between the main poultry diseases and the antibody production by the bursa of Fabricious.
