The swollen head syndrome in broiler chickens. The affect birds were between twenty one and fifty days old, reared in groups that varied from eight thousand to twenty thousand broilers. In most outbreaks the S.H.S. has been observed along with colisepticaemic infections. The birds showed swelling of the periocular, inermandibular regions, and wattles. The main histological findings were characterized by inflammatory changes concerning the mucosa of the nasal cavities, sinuses, larynx and trachea. In areas with respiratory epitelium there was loss of cilia and sloughing. The soft tissues of the dermis show an abundant exudate and granulomas which most likely would indicate a secondary involvement of Escherichia coli.
